WILEY SMITH, age 90, of Demorest, Georgia, passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012, at a private care facility. Mr. Smith was born on October 11, 1921, in Walhalla, South Carolina, to the late Harley A. and Edna McKinney Smith. He was a United States Army combat veteran of World War II, landing in the Normandy Invasion in 1944. Mr. Smith was self-employed as an automotive technician for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW. Mr. Smith was also a member of Demorest Baptist Church where he served as an usher for many years. Survivors include his wife, Awa Nix Smith, Demorest, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Julian Peeples, Dalton, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Robyn Smith, Monroe, GA; grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and Grant Mantooth and Dan and Katie Peeples, all of Dalton, GA; four great-grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac Mantooth and Nate and Ansley Peeples; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at Demorest Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Mewborn officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Habersham County American Legion Post #84, the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15, and the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to Demorest Baptist Church, P.O. Box 87, Demorest, Georgia 30535.
