Tommy James Powell, Sr.

TOMMY JAMES POWELL, age 87, of Cornelia, GA, died Monday, April 24, 2006 at a private care facility. Mr. Powell was born on February 3, 1919 in Habersham County, Georgia. He was a son of the late Thomas Spear and Ruth York Powell and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Sallie York Powell, brother, Hubert Powell and a sister Lala Powell. Mr. Powell was a member of the Welcome Home Baptist Church and the Cornelia Lodge #92 F & AM where he received his 50 year apron. He joined the United States Air Force on September 19, 1938 and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Powell served in Europe from 1942 - 1945, was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone from 1946 - 1948, and moved back to Cornelia in 1948. He then was stationed in Albuquerque, NM from 1951 - 1952, having retired in 1952. Mr. Powell was a lifetime member of the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post #7720. He worked with the Habersham County Sheriff's Office as well as the Baldwin Police Department and as a security officer at the Habersham County Medical Center. Mr. Powell also drove the school bus for the South Habersham High School Football Team 1965 - 1966. He enjoyed all wildlife and the outdoors. He spent much of his life raising cattle and horses. He almost always had at least a few good dogs around. He would spend hours on end just watching and caring for all of his animals. They gave him great joy. Survivors include: Wife: Agnes Funk Powell, Mt. Airy, GA; Sons: Tommy James Powell, Jr., and Jerry Powell, both of Cornelia, GA; Allan Greene, Mt. Airy, GA; Brother: Milton Powell, Cornelia, GA; Sister: Betty Gray, Cornelia, GA; 4 grandchildren: Tommy James, III "Jamie" Powell, Carolina Beach, NC; Jody Powell, Cornelia, GA; Kendall Greene and Aspen Greene, both of Mt. Airy, GA; 1 great-grandchild: Ethan John Powell, Carolina Beach, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with Rev. Larry Ryals officiating. Burial will follow in the Welcome Home Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Welcome Home Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O.
