Samuel Moses Mashburn, age 80, of Clarkesville, GA, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Mashburn was born on May 28, 1927 in Macon County, North Carolina to the late Frank Edward and Ina Fay Moses Mashburn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward Ray Mashburn and James Alonzo Mashburn as well as one sister, Lucy Sue Blackwell. He was retired from the United States Navy having served 20years; during that time he served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, Bay of Pigs, and 28 other battles and/or conflicts. Mr. Mashburn served as Shore Patrol and recruiting officer. After retirement he served 20 years as a guard at the Lee Arrendale Correctional Institute. Mr. Mashburn was of the Baptist Faith. He was loved and respected by so many and he will be sorely missed by relatives, friends, and shipmates. Survivors include: his wife: Nina Mashburn, Clarkesville, GA; his daughters: Pat Mashburn, Clarkesville, GA; Kit Lewis, Athens, GA; Sandra Kimbrell, Braselton, GA; Teresa York, Cornelia, GA; his sister: Annalee Greer, Franklin, NC; his brothers: Gilbert Mashburn, Virginia Beach, VA; Richard Mashburn, Arden, NC; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2007 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with Rev. Billy Burrell officiating. Interment will follow in the V.F.W. Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Arrangements are in the care of Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia.
