REV. RICHARD L. SCOGGINS, age 88, of Clarkesville, GA, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 . Rev. Scoggins was born on August 13, 1918 in Augusta, GA to the late Katherine and Lee Roy Scoggins. In addition to his parents Rev. Scoggins was also preceded in death by a sister, Grace Dawkins. He received a BA degree from Toccoa Falls Bible College and BD and ThD degrees from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. Rec. Scoggins served as pastor of Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Panama City, Florida from 1950 - 1975. During this time he served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Florida, and in 1963 was elected Moderator of the Synod of Florida. He also served as Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA. Rev. Scoggins served as Pastor of the Cornelia Presbyterian Church in Cornelia, Georgia from 1975 until his retirement in 1988. Church membership in Cornelia tripled during his tenure. He spent a great deal of time counseling those with chemical dependencies and visiting those confined to hospitals, nursing homes, and jails. Rev. Scoggins was the co-founder of the annual community Holiday Help Grief Seminar. He attended and spoke at each of the seminars except this year, the seventeenth year. Rev. Scoggins was deeply involved with the Cornelia Kiwanis Club and the Habersham County Chaplains Association. After his retirement, he was named Bank Chaplain for Community Bank and Trust. Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Sara Laseter Scoggins, Clarkesville, GA; Daughter and Son-in-law: Mary Kathryn and Robert Daffin, Panama City, FL; Son and Daughter-in-law: Richard, Jr. and Susan Scoggins, Guntersville, AL; Grandson: Richard, III "Velvet" Scoggins, and Great-grandchildren: Hannah, Gracie, and Billy, all of Richland, Georgia; Sister: Dottie Crouch, Columbia, SC; Brother-in-law: Wylie Dawkins, Columbia, SC. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006 from the Cornelia Presbyterian Church with Rev. Blaine Walker and Rev. Walt Stiles officiating. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornelia Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 165, Cornelia, GA 30531. ARRANGEMENTS ARE IN THE CARE OF WHITFIELD FUNERAL HOME, NORTH CHAPEL, DEMOREST, GEORGIA.
