Myrtile "Teal" Wood Smith, age 94, of Cornelia, Georgia died Friday, April 27, 2007 at a private care facility. Mrs. Smith was born on May 26, 1912 in Esom Hill, Polk County, Georgia to the late James W. and Elizabeth Brewster Wood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert T. Smith and a grandson, Trent Smith. She is last survivor of her immediate family of five brothers and four sisters. A long time resident of Cornelia, Georgia, she and her husband, Delbert, were owners of Smith's Men Shop, established in 1947 and closed in 1982. Mrs. Smith belonged to the First Baptist Church of Cornelia, and she was a volunteer in numerous organizations including her Sunday school class, Helping Hands, Round Table, Friends of Cornelia Library, Habersham Historical Society, Habersham Community Theater, and Habersham County March of Dimes. She assisted at the Cornelia Chamber of Commerce and was a volunteer of the Ground Observation Corps during the 1950's. She was employed by the Northeast Georgian Newspaper as its Social Editor for a number of years. She was also employed with The Old Sautee Store for a number of years. She enjoyed painting and exhibited her artwork at local events on a number of occasions. Mrs. Smith attended Bowden College in Georgia. Survivors include: her son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Shirley Smith, Cornelia, GA; grandson and his wife: Wynn and Rosalyn Smith, Gainesville, FL; her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Lib Smith, Columbia, SC; grandson: Shannon Smith and his children: Caroline, Nathaniel, Annabeth, and Sarah, Charlotte, NC, granddaughter and her husband, Ginger and Patton Davis and their children, Megan and Tripp, Lakenheath AF Base, England; Granddaughter and her husband: Elizabeth and Mike Trenbeath, Hopkins, SC; step-granddaughter and her husband, Tracey and Russ Miller and their children, Boone and Nolan; step-granddaughter: Kristi Evans, Columbia, SC, her caretaker for many years, Glenda Brito and her personal physician: Dr. Nancy Watson. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2007, from Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Greg Walton officiating. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 96, Cornelia, GA 30531.
