Mary Elizabeth Carey, age 81, of Baldwin, Georgia, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Carey was born on August 30, 1927 in Habersham County, Georgia to the late John and Lavonia Mullinax Armstrong. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Carey, a son, Ray Carey, a brother, John B. Armstrong, and a sister, Oma Lee Armstrong. Mrs. Carey was retired from the apparel industry and attended the Bethesda Fellowship Church. Survivors include: her daughters: Sara Jo Whitehead, Nicholson, GA; Faye Carey, Baldwin, GA; Shirley Etris, Nicholson, GA; Patsy McGill, Commerce, GA; her son: Ansel Carey, Baldwin, GA; her sisters: Flossie Dooley, Cornelia, GA; Cleo Pealor, Sharpsburg, GA; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her special friends: Dan and Wanda Chitwood. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia with Rev. Clarence Reynolds and Rev. Paris Whitworth officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the South Chapel from 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday. Arrangements are in the care of Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia.
