Lewis R. Smith

Lewis Robert Smith, age 81, a lifelong resident of Demorest, died Sunday, March 5, 2006 at Scenic View Nursing Home from complications due to a stroke last October. Lewis retired from Ethicon after 41 years of service. He was an avid golfer having been a member of Piedmont and the Pines Golf Clubs. During WWII, he served with the Army assigned to the South Pacific as a member of the 6th Ranger battalion that liberated the infamous Cabanatuan prison camp in the Philippines. He was a life-long member of Grant Reeves VFW Post 7720. Lewis is survived by his constant companions, Lucy his dog and his cats Dee and Scout, also by his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Chuck Jenkins, of Demorest, his son and his partner, Mitchell Smith and Michael Edwards, of Atlanta, his sister, Eunice Frye, of Clarksville, two nieces, Louise Brown and Jean Miller of Clarkesville, one nephew Raleigh 'R.W' Smith of Centralia, IL., plus numerous other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2006, 11:00 AM at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel with interment at Grant Reeves VFW Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday between 6 PM and 8 PM at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the John B. Gesbocker Animal Shelter of Habersham County; 4132 B Old Toccoa Hwy, P O Box 1442, Clarkesville, GA 30523. Arrangements are in the care of Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia.
