L. G. Bowen, Jr., age 92, of Cornelia, GA, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at his son's residence. Mr. Bowen was born on August 23, 1916 in Clermont, Georgia to the late Luther G., Sr. and Elizabeth O'Kelley Bowen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Valeria Bowen Partain. Mr. Bowen was a United States Navy veteran having served his country during World War II. Mr. Bowen was a member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church and had served as a Deacon, was a Past Chairman of Deacons, and was a Deacon Emeritus at his church. He taught the Adult Men's Sunday School Class at his church for 50 years and taught Sunday School at Scenic View Health Care for 8 years. He was a member of the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F & A M and had received his 65 year apron and pin. Mr. Bowen received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Georgia and was a retired vocational agriculture teacher with 12 years of dedicated service. He was Past Chairman for the Hall County Board of Education where he served for 8 years. Mr. Bowen was a farmer and a dairy farmer having served on the Board of Directors of Better Maid Dairy Coop; there he marketed the milk his cows produced. Survivors include his wife of 70 years: Blanche Truelove Bowen, Cornelia, GA; his son and daughter-in-law: Denver G. and Pamela Bowen, Demorest, GA; his granddaughter and her husband: Linka and Kenneth Burnette, Loganville, GA; his great-grandchildren: Kendall, Courtney, Bowen, Kelley, and Susanna Burnette; his step-grandchildren: Michael Greber and Teresa Moffett. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia with Dr. T. Logan Smith and Rev. G.W. Mathis officiating. Interment will follow in Level Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15, and the Habersham County American Legion Chapter #84. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2009.
