Jo Nell Shirley Holcomb, age 79, of Clarkesville, GA, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at her residence. Mrs. Holcomb was born on October 17, 1930 in Franklin County, Georgia to the late George Webster Shirley and Mary Elizabeth Stone Shirley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul "Dick" Holcomb. Mrs. Holcomb attended the Turnerville Church of God. She was a retired private nurse for terminally ill patients. She was a published author and a newspaper column writer for Georgia and Tennessee newspapers. In 1990, Mrs. Holcomb was honored as a Golden Poet by the World of Poetry for her poem, 'My Angels.' She was a member of the Eastern Tribe of the Cherokee Indian having been the great-great granddaughter of Gullie Dove Vandiver. Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law: Deborah and Michael Stewart, Clarkesville, GA; her sons and daughters-in-law: Danny Dale and Judy Holcomb, Clarkesville, GA; George Jerry and Gayle Holcomb, Mt. Airy, GA; her sisters: Mary Ann Crow, Tallulah Falls, GA; Ora Sue Smith, Myrtle Beach, SC; Ruby Lee Harkness, Woodland, AL; her sister and brother-in-law: Joyce and Billy Dilworth, Toccoa, GA; her brother and sister-in-law: Hubert C. and Sue Ann Shirley, Dacula, GA; her brother: Paul Shirley, Toccoa, GA; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia with Rev. Billy Burrell and Rev. Hubert Shirley officiating. Interment will follow in the Turnerville Church of God Cemetery, Hollywood, GA. The family will receive friends at the North Chapel from 6 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Arrangements are in the care of Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia.
