James Howard Burton, age 88, of Cornelia, GA and formerly of Marietta, GA, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Burton was born on January 9, 1920 in Cobb County, Georgia to the late Lee and Mozelle Newsome Burton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Morris Burton, a sister, Mildred B. Hendrix, a grandson, Ross Andrew Brock, and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Brock. Mr. Burton was a graduate of the Marietta high School and was a three sport athlete. He was a member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church; there he was a member of the Southern Baptist Men's Sunday School Class and Past President of the Chosen Few. Mr. Burton was retired from the United States Army after serving 23 years and having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was also a retired Civil Service Employee with over 20 years of service. Survivors include: his daughter and son-in-law: Peggy and Lester Brock, Alto, GA; his son and daughter-in-law: Dr. Jodie and Shirley Burton, Cornelia, GA; 4 grandchildren: Michael Burton, Cornelia, GA; Carey Brock and Greg Brock, both of Alto, GA; Alicia Brock Wells, Cumming, GA; 6 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2008 from the Kennesaw Memorial Park with Rev. Greg Walton and Rev. David Turner officiating. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, GA, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
