Irene Thompson

MARY IRENE THOMPSON, age 92, of Demorest, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Habersham Home East following an extended illness. Mrs. Thompson was born on November 11, 1916 in Demorest, Georgia to the late john Dillard and Leila Martin Vinson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Hoyt Thompson, a brother, Willard Vinson, and three sisters, Eva Vinson Sosbee, Elizabeth Kelley Boas, and Vera Wheeler Perry. Mrs. Thompson graduated from Piedmont College with a Bachelor of the Arts Degree. She retired from teaching after 32 years of dedicated service to the Habersham County School System. She taught at the following schools over her career: Stonepile, Fairview, Hazel Creek, and Hazel Grove. Survivors include: her daughters and sons-in-law: Miriam and Don Moore, Cornelia, GA; Sue and Larry Carnes, Mt. Airy, GA; Her grandchildren: Rhonda Smith, Carole Elrod, Sandra Mealor, Joel Golden, Anita Tomlin, Lynn Moore, Ryan Carnes; 10 Great-Grandchildren; One-Great-Grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2009 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia with Rev. Scott Ledbetter and Rev. Larry Carnes officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the North Chapel from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
