Gordon Odell Hicks

Gordon Odell Hicks, age 78, of Nashville, TN, and formerly of Demorest, GA, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2009. Mr. Hicks was born on July 23, 1931 in Demorest, GA to the late Gordon C. and Grace Autry Hicks. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sam and Leacie Hicks and Rev. Colius and Susie Brownlow Autry as well as a nephew, Michael D. Hicks. Mr. Hicks graduated from Demorest high School in 1948 as President of his class and entered Andrew Jackson Business School in Nashville, TN at age 16. He was also a 1956 graduate of George Peabody College having earned his Bachelor of Science Degree. At George Peabody College, he was President of his class and the student body, President of the Student Council, a member of Phi Chi Alpha and Kappa Phi Kappa Fraternities, was Vice-President of Entrepreneurs, a Peabody Player, and was Senior Attendant for Mr. Peabody. Mr. Hicks was employed in Birmingham, AL as a computer system design analyst for M.S. Steel until his retirement 37 years later. Mr. Hicks loved Nashville and enjoyed coming back to call Nashville his home. He also served his country in the United States Air Force. Survivors include: his two sisters and brothers-in-law: Lois and Grady Tench and Elaine and Fred Holbrooks, all of Demorest, GA; his brother and sister-in-law: Dwayne and Maureen Hicks, Demorest, GA; his aunt: Vinnie Lee Popham, Demorest, GA. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Terry Rice officiating. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia, from 12 noon until 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, just prior to the graveside service. Arrangements are in the care of Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia.
