George D. Echols

Mr. George Duncan Echols, age 92 of Lula, GA, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the Bell Minor Home in Gainesville, Georgia following an extended illness. Mr. Echols was born on October 6, 1915 in Hall County, Georgia to the late Timothy D. and Cordelia Duncan Echols. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Vernie Smith Echols, his brothers, James Echols and Talmadge Echols, as well as his sisters, Beulah Tribble and Lois Sims. Mr. Echols was a member and a deacon of the Enon Baptist Church. He was a farmer and self-employed carpenter. Survivors include: his daughters and sons-in-law: JoAnn and Marvin Brock, Lula, GA; Janice and Lloyd Wilson, Alto, GA; his son and daughter-in-law: Jimmy and Valvoreth Echols, Alto, GA; his brother and sister-in-law: William Clyde "Bill" and Glenda Echols, Alto, GA; 12 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Morris, Rev. Dean Bryant, Rev. Loyd Martin and Rev. Loyd Free officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Rev. Chris Anderson officiating at the graveside. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Monday. Mr. Echols will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday to lie in state until the funeral hour. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to the Gideon's International Bible Program, P.O. Box 195, Baldwin, GA 30511 or to the Enon Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia.
