FERN S. GIFFIN, age 85, of Clarkesville, GA, died Monday, October 13, 2008 following an extended illness. Mrs. Giffin was born on July 20, 1923 in Troy, Indiana to the Walter G. and Myrtle Harris Scott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Hazel Scott and Violet Ann Scott, as well as her brothers, Forrest Scott, Woodfin Scott, Philbert Scott, Oakley Scott, and Ira Ashley Scott. Mrs. Giffin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville where she was a former treasurer for the Presbyterian Church Women. She was a life member of the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post #7720, Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Giffin was a Campfire Girl Leader, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Sharing and Caring, and Meals on Wheels. She was retired from Stern's Department Store. Survivors include: her husband of 65 years: Richard "Dick" Giffin, Clarkesville, GA; her daughter: Pamela Fern Giffin, Easley, SC; her daughter and son-in-law: Mary Alice and Bob Shipman, Clarkesville, GA; her daughter: Betty Jane Giffin, Demorest, GA; her sons and daughters-in-law: Ronald and Maureen Giffin, Riverhead, NY; Timothy and Suzy Giffin, East Meadow, NY; her sisters: Olive Smallwood, Iowa; Mary Iris Couts, Illinois; her brother and sister-in-law: Beecher and Cornelia Scott, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2008 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia with Rev. Lisa Graves officiating. Interment will follow on the V. F. W. Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
