Edith Grace Banks, age 89, of Homer, Georgia, passed away on Monday, August, 29, 2011, at the Athens Regional Medical Center. Miss Banks was born on September 3, 1921, in Franklin County, Georgia. She was a daughter of the late William Jackson and Maude Elizabeth Means Banks. Miss Banks was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. She was a graduate of Piedmont College where she received a basketball scholarship. Miss Banks taught school for a number of years. She was also employed with the Tilton Equipment Company, where she retired after ten years of service. Miss Banks was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church. Survivors include her special nephew, Kent R. Payne, Toccoa, GA; close friend, Loretta Barnes, Commerce, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was the last member of her immediate family. Funeral services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia with Rev. James McLendon officiating. Interment will follow in Banks County Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral hour on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Homer United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Homer, Georgia 30547 or to the Homer Alliance Church, 151 Athens Street, Homer, Georgia 30547.
