EARL YORK, age 93, of Atlanta and formerly of Cornelia, GA passed away peacefully at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 7, 2010. Mr. York was born to the late Enoch C. York and Caloma Wood York in Clarkesville, GA on May 3, 1917; he grew up in Cornelia, GA, one of 7 brothers and 1 sister. Mr. York was the last surviving member of his generation. In the Pacific theater of World War II, Mr. York served in the Air Force's 369th Bomber Squadron on the islands of Tinian and Iwo Jima. For his service, he was awarded three Bronze Stars, as well as Good Conduct and Victory medals. Following the war, Mr. York worked in the Ecusta Paper Division of Olin Corporation in Asheville, NC for 38 years. Earl is survived by his wife of 69 years, Iris Crownover York, sons, David and Michael, and grandson, Jay and Wil, all of Atlanta. Local survivors are sister-in-law, Eloise York; Nephew, Keith York; nieces, Kathy Stephens and Lisa Kimsey. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Level Grove Cemetery with Jay York officiating. Full Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post # 84, Grant Reeves Post # 7720 and the D.A.V. Chapter #15. Local arrangements are in the care of the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, GA.
