DONALD COMPTON SHORT, age 78, of Cornelia, Georgia, died Saturday, May 16, 2009. Mr. Short was born on October 2, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late William R. and Helen Compton Short. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Crow Short, and his brother, Charles M. Short. Mr. Short was a graduate of Cornelia High School and attended the University of Georgia. A member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church and the Southern Baptist Men's Sunday School Class, he also served as church bus driver. He was a life member of the Cornelia Optimist Club was instrumental in organizing the Cornelia Little League Baseball Program. Mr. Short was a sales representative for North Georgia Wholesale Company most of his life and retired from Peachtree Door Company. He was an Athletic Official of the Georgia High School Association for 15 years. Survivors include: his daughters: Donna Haynes, Cornelia, GA; Dianne Oliver, Demorest, GA; his daughter and son-in-law: Judy and Tom Pagani, Charlotte, NC; his son and daughter-in-law: Bill and Pam Short, Gainesville, GA; his grandchildren: John, Travis, and Emily Haynes, Megan and Lauren Oliver, Kennedy and Keaton Pagani, and Don, Kyle, and Russ Short. He was the last member of his immediate family. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 from the Cornelia First Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Harris, Rev. Mark Weaver, and Rev. David Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Level Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia from 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Cornelia First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 96, Cornelia, GA 30531.
