CLAUDE VERNON BARNES, age 92, of Cornelia, Georgia, died Friday, November 21, 2008. Mr. Barnes was born on September 18, 1916 in Habersham County, Georgia to the late John and Elizabeth Herrin Barnes. He was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II and was a life member of the Grant Reeves V.F.W. post #7720. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Southern Baptist Men's Sunday School Class. He was a retired weave room operator with Lumite Corporation with 33 years of service. Mr. Barnes was the last member of his immediate family. Survivors include: his wife: Jean Ariail Barnes, Cornelia, GA; his son and daughter-in-law: Keith and Brenda Barnes, Cornelia, GA; his step-son and daughter-in-law: Jimmy and Carmen Simmons, Demorest, GA; his step-daughter and son-in-law: Susan and Randall Harden, Dalton, GA; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2008 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia, with Rev. David Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors to be provided by The Habersham County American Legion Post #84, The Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post #7720 and The Rabun County D.A.V. Chapter #15. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 until 6 p.m. on Saturday.
