Charlie Ellington Smith, age 83, of Baldwin, GA died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at a private care facility following an extended illness. Mr. Smith was born in Pickens County, S.C. on August 15, 1924 to the late George Earl and Mary Elizabeth Anderson Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Tench Smith, three brothers, George Earl Smith, Jr., Raymond Smith, Walter Smith and two sisters, Sadie and Annie Nations. Mr. Smith was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Banks County. He served his community faithfully in law enforcement having retired as Chief of Police with Demorest, Police Department and formerly served in the Jackson County Sheriffs Department, and the Cornelia Police Department. Survivors include, his daughters, Sandra & Billy Joe Barrett, Hollingsworth, Phyllis Smith & special friend, Steve Sosby, Toccoa, Wanda & Phil Perry, Cornelia, Denise & Steve Holland, Hollingsworth, his sister, Rachel Davis, Gastonia, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 from the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, GA with Rev. Ralph Smith and Larry Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, Banks County, GA.
