Buford Smith

BUFORD SMITH, age 84, of Cornelia, GA, died Monday, September 4, 2006 at the Habersham County Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born on December 9, 1921 in Banks County, Georgia to the late William J. and Lucy Smith. He was also preceded in death by 4 sisters, 3 brothers, and Foster parents, Emory and Minnie Brady Lawrence. Mr. Smith was a member and a deacon of the Camp Creek Baptist Church, as well as the official church greeter for a number of years. He was a United States Army World War II veteran and was a retired employee of Ethicon with 40 years of service. Mr. Smith was currently employed with Quality Foods. Survivors in clued: his wife, Lucille Chitwood Smith, Cornelia, GA; his sons, Buford Lynn Smith, Mt. Airy, GA and Daniel Jerome Smith, Athens, GA; his son and daughter-in-law: William Glenn and Carolyn Smith, Demorest, GA sisters: Gladys McCoy, Mt. Airy, GA; Christell Meeks, Cornelia, GA; Brothers: Bill Smith, Mt. Airy, GA; Harley Lawrence, Gainesville, GA; 6 grandchildren: Chad Smith, Demorest, GA; Deana Rider, Cleveland, GA; Amanda Mitchell, Baldwin, GA; Felicia Ward, Mt. Airy, GA; Angela Hogan, Atlanta, GA; Maddy Anderson, Mt. Airy, GA; 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 from the Camp Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Harry Rudasill and Dr. Bill Barrs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Smith will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday to lie in state until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
